Professor Dong Mingdong and Doctor Lin Lin visit Biomass Group and give lectures to Group Members
2012.12.31, Prof. Dong Mingdong and Dr. Lin Lin, who come from iNANO, visited Xishuangbanna tropic botanical garden and lectured for biomass group members. In the morning of December 31, Prof. Dong first introduced a series research works of using scanning probe microscopy and related techniques for analysis structure characteristics and biological effects of macromolecular under nanometer scales. He emphasized the applications of molecular self assembled in the DNA structure changes, applications of atomic force microscopy in biology, study of the macromolecular self assembly using scanning tunneling microscopy, test and analysis of single molecule mechanical spectrum, Filamentous bacteria transport electrons over centimeter distances. Then, Dr. Lin reported preparation of a novel carbon based catalyst and its application in biodiesel production.
After lecture, Prof. Dong and Dr. Lin communicated with our group members, and discussed how to cooperate with our group in long-term. The research interests of biomass group include: Synthesis and application of nano-catalysts, magnetic catalysts and magnetic carbon based catalyst; hydrolysis of cellulose and lingo-cellulose in low temperature for production of glucose; microbial fermentation of waste biomass (proper exciple of Jatropha curcas, Bagasse, etc.) for different high value-added products like 1,3- propylene glycol and hydrogen; modified of ionic liquid and its application; pretreatment of lingo-cellulose; thermochemcial conversion of glycerin and lignin. According to the study focus of our group, Prof. Dong pointed out their research teams have great potential for cooperation with our group in the use of scanning probe microscopy and related techniques for observation and analysis hydrolysis of cellulose, pretreatment of lingo-cellulose and thermochemcial conversion of lignin under nanometer scales.
From the reports and exchanges, it not only promoted our mutual understanding of new technologies of microscopy and new types of catalysts, but also strengthened team members’ consciousness of using new technologies for detection and analysis traditional reactions. It is useful for improving our group.
Dong Mingdong, gained phD from CentralSouthUniversity and Sweden, Charles Moss Polytechnic university, then went to iNANO to do PhD Postdoctoral in 2003 and to United States Harvard University Rowland Institute to do full-time researchers after Postdoctoral in 2008. Then he was appointed for the tenure of iNANO in 2009.
