Prof. Zhen FANG won the Governor’s Friendship (Caiyun) Award in 2012 in Yunnan for the significant contribution to the Jatropha biodiesel industry and bioenergy.
On April 26, the 2012 Yunnan Foreign Expert “Caiyun Award” Ceremony and the Foreign Expert “May 1st” Reception were grandly held at the Zhenzhuang Hotel in Kunming, organized by the provincial government. A total of 10 experts received the award. Prof. Zhen Fang, leader of the Biomass Research Group at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), attended the ceremony as one of the 10 awardees and the only expert from the Kunming Branch of CAS to receive this honor.
Prof. Zhen Fang a Chinese-Canadian scientist who graduated with a Ph.D. in Engineering from McGill University in Canada. Specializing in the synthesis of nanocatalysts to facilitate biomass conversion, Prof. Zhen Fang has conducted over 20 years of research on bioenergy and nanotechnology at prestigious universities and institutes worldwide. He has published 58 research papers (mostly in Q1 group) in internationally renowned energy, chemical engineering, or materials engineering journals, with a total citation count of approximately 1,110, an H-index exceeding 17, and an average citation of 19 per paper. Currently, he has applied for 21 authorized invention patents in China, 3 PCT international patents, and 2 U.S. patents, authored 4 monographs (including the world’s first systematic monograph on using supercritical water for rapid synthesis of nanomaterials in biomass metallurgy, published by Springer, the largest scientific and technical book publisher in 2010), and co-edited an English monograph on biodiesel. Through years of research, he discovered that cellulose can be fully dissolved and hydrolyzed in high-pressure hot water and pioneered the technology to rapidly and completely dissolve and hydrolyze wood in hot water, opening a new research field in biomass refinery. Prof. Zhen Fang currently serves on the editorial boards of 8 international journals, is CAS “Hundred Talents scholar,” and is among the first batch of “Hundred Overseas High-Level Talent Introduction Plan” recipient in Yunnan Province.
The award ceremony was presided over by Shaoxiang Ding, Secretary General of the Provincial Government. At the meeting, Vice Governor Jiang Li announced the recognition decision of the provincial government, and Vice Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Governor Jiheng Li presented awards to the award-winning experts. The 10 foreign experts who won the “Caiyun Award” this time come from countries such as Germany, Canada, Australia, India, Singapore, Bangladesh, South Korea, and the United States. They have made positive contributions to the socio-economic development of Yunnan in the fields of railway construction, biotechnology, bioenergy, medicine and education.
The “Caiyun Award” was established in 1997 and is the highest award awarded by the Yunnan Provincial Government to foreign experts who have worked in Yunnan and made outstanding contributions. So far, 13 editions have been selected, and more than 100 foreign experts have won this honor. This award has had a positive and far-reaching impact on promoting Yunnan, inspiring foreign experts to work in Yunnan, and accelerating the rise of Yunnan. It has been highly praised by various sectors of society and foreign experts.
The leaders attending the award ceremony and reception include Jiheng Li, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Governor, Jiang Li, Standing Committee Member of the Provincial Party Committee and Deputy Governor, Bajicai Jiang, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Provincial People’s Congress and Chairman of the Provincial Federation of Trade Unions, Shaoxiang Ding, Secretary General of the Provincial Government, and Zhiyun Tong, Deputy Secretary General of the Provincial Government. More than 100 people, including 17 provincial department heads such as Yi Jie, Director of the Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security, award-winning foreign experts, representatives of foreign experts working in Yunnan, and representatives of project units, attended the award ceremony and reception.
Hua Shen, Vice President of the Kunming Branch of CAS, accompanied by Comrade Na Zhao from the Science and Technology Foreign Affairs Office of the Branch, was also invited to attend the award ceremony.
方真研究员出席2012年度云南省外国专家“彩云奖”颁奖典礼
4月26日，由省政府组织的2012年度云南省外国专家“彩云奖”颁奖典礼暨外国专家“五一”招待会在昆明震庄迎宾馆隆重举行，共有10位专家获此奖项。版纳植物园生物能源研究组组长方真研究员作为10位获奖专家之一，也是昆明分院唯一一位获此殊荣的专家，应邀请出席了典礼。
方真研究员系加拿大籍华裔科学家，毕业加拿大麦吉尔（McGill）大学，获工程博士学位。方真研究员主要从事合成纳米催化剂以促进生物质转化等领域的研究，在国内外著名大学和研究所从事生物能源和纳米技术研究达20多年，在国际著名的能源化工或材料工程刊物发表研究58篇(大多为Q1区),论文引用总次数约为1110次，H指数大于17，篇均论文引用19次。目前，他已申请中国授权发明专利21项，3项PCT国际及2项美国发明专利，出版专著4部（包括2010年由世界最大的科技图书出版社Springer出版的世界第一部系统介绍用超临界水快速合成纳米材料用于生物质冶炼的专著），并合作编辑一部生物柴油的英文专著。通过多年的研究，他发现在高压热水中纤维素能完全溶解并水解,还首度发明将木材在热水中快速完全溶解和水解的技术，为生物质的冶炼开辟了一个新的研究领域。方真研究员目前担任8个国际期刊的编委，入选中国科学院“百人计划”，系云南省首批“百名海外高层次人才引进计划”人才。
颁奖典礼由省政府秘书长丁绍祥主持。会上，李江副省长宣读了省政府的表彰决定，省委副书记、省长李纪恒为获奖专家进行了颁奖。此次获得“彩云奖”的10位外国专家分别来自德国、加拿大、澳大利亚、印度、新加坡、孟加拉国、韩国、美国等国家，他们在铁路建设、生物科技、生物能源、医学、教育等领域为云南社会经济的发展做出了积极贡献。
“彩云奖”于1997年设立，是云南省政府授予在滇工作并做出突出贡献的外国专家的最高奖项。迄今为止已评选了13届，共有100余名外国专家获此殊荣。该奖项对宣传推介云南、激励外国专家在滇工作、促进云南加速崛起产生了积极深远的影响，深受社会各界和外国专家的好评。
出席此次颁奖典礼暨招待会的领导有省委副书记、省长李纪恒，省委常委、副省长李江，省人大常委会副主任、省总工会主席江巴吉才，省政府秘书长丁绍祥，省政府副秘书长童志云等。省人力资源和社会保障厅厅长解毅等17个省直部门负责人、获奖外国专家、在滇工作的外国专家代表、项目单位代表100余人参加颁奖典礼暨招待会。
中国科学院昆明分院沈华副院长在分院科技外事处赵娜同志的陪同下也应邀请出席了颁奖典礼。
