“Science Builds Dreams • Lights Up the Future” – Sanming, Where My Dreams Started

 At the invitation of the Sanming Municipal Education Bureau, Prof. Zhen Fang participated in the Fujian Province Primary and Secondary School Science Education Series Activity themed “Building Dreams with Science∙Illuminating the Future” on November 25, 2025. This event was organized by the Fujian Provincial Department of Education and hosted by the Sanming Municipal Education Bureau, aiming to promote the in-depth development of science education in primary and secondary schools across the province. Participants included Prof. Zhen Fang from Nanjing Agricultural University, Prof. Rui Chen from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Party Committee Secretary Zuqi Chen from the College of Teacher Education at Fujian Normal University, Sanming Municipal Education Bureau Director Mingsheng Liu, Deputy District Chief Xuzhong Chen of the Sanyuan District Government, as well as relevant leaders from provincial and municipal education departments, representatives from various local education sectors, principals, and teachers.

At the beginning of the event on the morning of the 25th, the attendees viewed an exhibition of scientific education achievements from the education bureaus of 11 counties (cities, districts) in Sanming City and 14 primary and secondary schools. Subsequently, Director Mingsheng Liu delivered a welcome speech and presented Prof. Zhen Fang with the appointment certificate of “Sanming City Primary and Secondary School Science Education Advisor.” Prof. Zhen Fang expressed:

“Thank you very much to the Sanming Education Bureau for your trust in me by awarding me the certificate of Scientific Education Consultant. It is both an honor and a responsibility to serve the educational cause of my hometown. Education is built upon a scientific foundation. I believe that whether in natural or social science curricula, science is the core, and we must cultivate students’ “Thinking in Science” mindset. I was born in Shaowu city and moved to Taining county when I was one month old, growing up in the county town of Taining. I attended the kindergarten class of Taining Experimental Primary School and graduated from both the Experimental Primary School and Taining No.1 Middle School. During my junior and senior high school years, I often visited Sanming to participate in youth Go tournaments, science competitions, or after university graduation to see my brother (who worked at Sanhua) and classmates. Sanming is also my hometown. I have lived, studied and worked in many cities both domestically and abroad, and every time I return to Sanming or Taining, I truly feel like coming home—it’s especially heartwarming. I remember in the summer of 2003, after studying abroad in Spain, Japan and Canada for 12 years, I first returned to Taining from Montreal, Canada, via multiple airports. The moment the plane landed at Wuyishan Airport (by Bus via Shaowu to Taining), I genuinely smelled the “fragrance of my hometown’s soil” as described in Feixiang’s song “The Clouds of My Hometown.” It was the unique aroma of the red soil in the northwestern Fujian region under the scorching summer sun. Thank you all!”

In the afternoon, Prof. Zhen Fang went to Sanming No.8 Middle School to give a 90-min speech on the topic of “My Growth Journey – Where Sanming My Dream Started” to students and teachers. He recalled his experience of picking pebbles to earn money during his youth in the summer vocation in the Primary school, using the proceeds of his labor to purchase ‘One Hundred Thousand Whys’ series books, thus sowing the seeds of science in his heart. He admitted that the road to growth is not smooth, and he has repeatedly experienced setbacks in overseas study selection and postgraduate entrance exams, but he has always adhered to his ideals and worked tirelessly. Prof. Zhen Fang also focused on the global issue of renewable energy, introducing the carbon neutral advantages of bioenergy and the research results of his team in the production of formaldehyde-free boards and biodiesel from straw. Combined with the agricultural and forestry biological resources of Sanming and Fujian, he looked forward to the application prospects of green technology. He encourages teachers and students:

Innovation from Questioning.”

and actively engage in agricultural fields and study in agricultural universities (such as Nanjing Agricultural University and China Agricultural University) engage in scientific research and agricultural innovation. After the lecture, the students raised many interesting questions to Prof. Zhen Fang, who patiently explained and hoped that the students would have dreams from an early age:

Ambition from Little,

Confidence from Success,

Thinking in Science,

Progress from Setback.”

In the evening, after finishing authentic Shaxian snacks at Sanming North Station (Shaxian), the sky gradually darkened. Prof. Fang sang “Clouds of My Hometown” and sat wearily at the window of the high-speed train heading north to Nanjing (via Nanchang). Although he was tired, his heart was filled with immense joy. Before parting, he said to the two young teachers who were bidding farewell:

“You need to learn how to sing ‘Clouds of My Hometown’. Next time when I come back, I will test you to see if you have the ability to correct the dissonance and ventilation problems in my singing. When you have free time, take military husbands and children to the wilderness on summer afternoons to smell if the fragrance of the red soil eruption exists. Your husbands cannot only sing the song ‘Returning from Target Shooting’ that I learned in the fourth grade of elementary school (commanded by the female squad leader of the 6789 unit courtyard), but also should learn to sing ‘999 Roses’. You request them to sing it to you on your birthdays with a revolutionary and romantic spirit.”

At the window of the northbound-train, station lights flickered like fireflies, and in the quiet carriage were Prof. Fang and a female train attendant from Nanchang. As train approached Taining Station, Prof. Fang said to her, “I grew up in Taining and can only take a photo during the 2-minute parking time.” She was moved and helped Prof. Fang take a photo that showed exhaustion (see below).


“科学筑梦点亮未来”三明我梦想开始的地方 

   应三明教育局的邀请,2025年11月25日,方真教授参加了 “科学筑梦点亮未来”为主题的福建省中小学科学教育系列活动。本次活动由福建省教育厅主办,三明市教育局承办,旨在推动全省中小学科学教育深入发展。南京农业大学教授方真,中国科学院动物研究所研究员陈睿,福建师范大学教师教育学院党委书记陈祖棋,三明市教育局局长刘铭盛,三元区政府副区长陈许忠,以及省、市教育部门相关领导、各地市教育界代表、校长和教师等共同参与了此次活动。

25日上午活动伊始,与会人员观看了三明市11个县(市、区)教育局和14所中小学校科学教育特色成果展。随后,刘铭盛局长致欢迎辞并为方真老师颁发“三明市中小学科学教育顾问”聘书。

方真老师表示:

“非常感谢三明教育局对我的信任给我颁发科学教育顾问证书,能为家乡教育事业服务是我的荣幸和责任。教育是建立在科学基础上的,我想不管自然和社会科学课程教育,科学是核心,要培养学生“Thinking in Science”的思维方式。我是邵武出生,一个月大时移居泰宁,泰宁县城长大的。我是泰宁实验小学幼儿园大班,实小和一中毕业的。我初高中时,常来三明参加少年围棋比赛和数理化竞赛或来大学毕业后来三明看我大哥(他在三化工作)和同学,三明也是我的故乡。我在国内外很多城市生活,学习和工作过,每次回三明和泰宁真正感觉到回到了家,特别亲切。记得2003年夏天,出国(西班牙,日本和加拿大)12年后,从加拿大蒙特利尔首次回泰宁,经多次转机,当飞机一下武夷山机场(坐大巴经转邵武回泰宁),闻到了费翔歌里《故乡的云》唱到的“故乡泥土的芬香”。

真正是闻到了小时候闽西北地区泰宁,夏日太阳暴晒下红土散发出一种特有的芬香。

中午,在回宾馆的半途中,顺道与厅局领导参访了三明市第二实验幼儿园。

下午,方真老师到三明八中以《我的成长心路历程——三明我梦想开始的地方》为题给同学们和老师演讲(90分钟,包括提问)。他回顾了自己少年时期挑鹅卵石挣钱的经历,用小学暑期劳动所得购买《十万个为什么》系列丛书,从而在心中播下科学的种子。他坦言成长之路并非坦途,屡经出国选拔与考研挫折,但始终坚守理想、不懈努力。方老师还聚焦全球可再生能源议题,介绍了生物质能源的碳中性优势与其团队在秸秆制无甲醛板材、生物柴油等方面的研究成果,并结合三明及福建的农林生物资源禀赋,展望了绿色科技的应用前景。他鼓励师生:

“在实践中学习,在交流中理解,在质疑声中创新”,勇于提问、敢于突破

积极投身农业邻域,报考农业院校如南农和中农从事科研与农业创新。讲座结束后,同学们向方老师提出了很多有趣的问题,方老师耐心讲解并希望同学们从小要有梦想:

傍晚,在三明北站(沙县)吃完正宗沙县小吃后,天色渐黑,方老师唱着《故乡的云》踏着疲惫的脚步坐在北上南京(经南昌)的动车窗口,尽管很累,但是心中充满了无比的欢乐。临别前,对两位送别的青年老师说:“要学会唱《故乡的云》,下次方老师来要考你们,看看是否有能力纠正方老师唱腔中的走调和换气问题,有空带军人老公和小孩在夏日午后去野地,闻闻是否还有红土喷发的芬香?”老公们不能只会唱我小学四年级会的(由6789部队大院女班长指挥)《打靶归来》,也要学会唱《九百九十九朵玫瑰》‌,要求生日时唱给你们听,要具有烂漫主义的革命情怀。在北上列车的窗口,一站站灯火扑来,像流萤飞走,寂静车厢中就方老师和一南昌女列车员。快到泰宁站时,方老师和她说:“我是泰宁长大的,下去只能利用停车的2分钟照张像。”她很感动地帮方老师照了一张显示很疲惫的像片(见下)。
