Biodiesel can be used as a substitute for petrochemical diesel by blending with petrochemical diesel. In the past 10 years, global biodiesel market emerged stabile growth of biodiesel production.\u00a0The raw materials for biodiesel production account for almost 60\uff5e80% of the total biodiesel cost. Therefore, a number of research projects have been carried out using non-edible oils such as\u00a0<em>Jatropha<\/em>\u00a0oil or fats, and other waste oils, to reduce the raw material cost.<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sourcedb.cas.cn\/sourcedb_xtbg_cas\/yw\/rc\/fas\/201106\/t20110603_3282312.html\">Prof. Fang Zhen<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) and his research team prepared a solid acid catalyst from Kraft lignin by treatment with phosphoric acid, pyrolysis and sulfuric acid. Subsequently, they used it as catalyst to synthesize biodiesel from high-acid value\u00a0<em>Jatropha<\/em>\u00a0oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">\u3000 In the biodiesel production process with the catalyst, first, the esterification of oleic acid was studied with an orthogonal experimental design to optimize reaction variables. Various reaction parameters, such as catalyst loading, reaction temperature and oil-to-methanol ratio on the esterification rate were optimized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">\u00a0In the study, the highest catalytic activity was achieved with a 96.1% esterification rate, and the catalyst can be reused three times with little deactivation under optimized conditions. Biodiesel production from\u00a0<em>Jatropha\u00a0<\/em>oil was studied under such conditions. It was found that 96.3% biodiesel yield from non-pretreated\u00a0<em>Jatropha<\/em>\u00a0oil with high-acid value (12.7 mg KOH\/g) could be achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300\">\u00a0 The researchers thus proposed that the single-step process could be a potential route for biodiesel production from high-acid value oil by simplifying the procedure and reducing costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300\">\u00a0 The study entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biotechnologyforbiofuels.com\/content\/4\/1\/56\/abstract\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">Direct production of biodiesel from high-acid value\u00a0<em>Jatropha<\/em>\u00a0oil with solid acid catalyst derived from lignin<\/span><\/a>\u201d has been published online in\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biotechnologyforbiofuels.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">Biotechnology for Biofuels<\/span><\/a><\/em>, 2011, 4:56 doi:10.1186\/1754-6834-4-56.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300\">Moreover, a monograph named\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novapublishers.com\/catalog\/product_info.php?products_id=21023\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">Biodiesel: Blends, Properties and Applications<\/span><\/a><\/em>\u00a0has been published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.novapublishers.com\/catalog\/\"><span style=\"color: #003300\">NOVA Publishers<\/span><\/a>.
